Hi Steve, this sounds interesting. Do you have any additional info you can share? Here are a few questions I have.
- Have you built a prototype of the application? If so, what platform.
- Do you have a host in place?
- What language/platform will you be wanting to develop the app with? There is a Facebook API for just about anything you can think of.
- How do you plan on monetizing the app.
Sorry if the questions come across as aggressive, but I do think this could be an interesting project and I am curious.

Hi Chris, at this stage I have passed on a little bit (not too much) more information for Fair Software's blog, which Alain will no doubt be posting soon.
As far as technical-based decisions, such as langauge/host -- I will leave that to the developer(s). The best answer to that is whatever they are most productive with that gets the job done. I am unaware of the details of Facebook development, but if any host platform is allowed, my first thought would be Google app engine, because I find scalability to be a terrifying issue to contemplate.
Here is the blog spiel
-------------------------
The setting for Despots is a fictional middle-ages world of many states or kingdoms. Each player plays a single character in that world. The central idea behind Despots- is that the players’ characters form the ruling elite of various states – the kings, courts, functionaries, generals, lords and ladies.
Player characters will be able to buy land, build armies, invest in businesses, collect taxes, command their underlings, spy on each other, and above all, conspire with one another via email.
So in a nutshell, I expect Despot to be a snake-pit of shifting alliances, intrigue, and skulduggery, both on an international level, as various states cooperate or compete to their best advantage, and also within each state itself, as individual player characters do the same on a personal level. It will be about strategy, diplomacy, and above all, trust.
Of course there is much more to it -- suffice to say that the game is one that hasn't been seen before.

As for monetizing the app - thats a very important and unanswered question.
